What is a rebuildable?

A rebuildable atomiser is an atomiser in which you build your own coil and fit your own cotton — rather than buying disposable pre-built coils. The principle is simple: you wind some resistance wire, install it on the deck, wick it, and off you vape.

The upsides:

• Better flavour — a well-built coil almost always beats a pre-made one
• Savings — a home-made coil costs a few cents against €3-5 for a disposable coil
• Complete customisation — resistance, wire type, diameter, number of wraps: everything is adjustable

The three types of rebuildable atomiser

RDA — Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer

The RDA (or dripper) is the simplest atomiser: it has no tank. You drip your e-liquid straight onto the cotton at regular intervals — roughly every 10 to 15 puffs. It is the ideal format for:

• Flavour testers (ideal if you change liquid often)
• Fans of heavy DL vaping with big clouds
• Newcomers to rebuildables (accessible deck, simple wicking)

The downside: you have to drip regularly. Not ideal on the move.

RTA — Rebuildable Tank Atomizer

The RTA pairs a rebuildable deck with a liquid tank (2 to 5ml depending on the model). You build your coil once and the cotton feeds itself automatically from the tank — exactly like a standard clearomiser, but with your own coil. It is the most versatile format:

• Autonomy when you are out and about
• No need to drip constantly
• Available in MTL (tight draw) or DL (airy draw)

RDTA — Rebuildable Dripping Tank Atomizer

The RDTA is a hybrid: the tank sits below the deck and the cotton draws liquid up from underneath by capillary action. It offers the best of both worlds — the RDA's easy access when building, and the autonomy of a tank. Rarer on the market, it suits experienced vapers.

RBA — Rebuildable Base Atomizer

The term RBA usually refers to the rebuildable deck built into certain kits (Boro tanks, DotAIO kits). It is not used on its own: it slots into a compatible mod. Perfect for moving to rebuildables without changing your whole setup.

FAQ: rebuildables

Are rebuildables hard to get to grips with?

A single-coil RDA takes 20 minutes to learn. The first few attempts feel confusing, but after two or three builds the movements become second nature. The Ares Finale RTA is designed with beginners in mind.

Is it really cheaper than disposable coils?

Yes, by a very wide margin. A roll of Kanthal costs €5-8 and gives you dozens of builds. A pack of 5 disposable coils costs as much and lasts far less time.

RDA or RTA to start with?

RDA if you vape at home and want to learn quickly. RTA if you need autonomy and vape on the move. Both work well as a first rebuildable.

Do you need a specific mod for rebuildables?

Most RDAs and RTAs are 510 and screw onto any mod. RBAs (Boro) need a Boro-compatible mod. Check the connection format before you buy.
