The rechargeable puff is what's left of the puff since France banned pre-filled disposables: the same compact, buttonless device with the same automatic draw — but a battery you recharge over USB-C, a tank you refill, and bottles of liquid supplied in the box. This guide explains how it works, how to refill it, how long it really lasts and how to pick the right one from our puff range. For the full picture (flavours, regulations, selection), see our guide to puffs.

Rechargeable puff: what changed compared with the disposable?

A disposable puff was a sealed block: liquid, battery and coil for single use, binned once empty. The rechargeable puff keeps the shape and the simplicity but separates the three parts:

  • A rechargeable battery over USB-C, usually 650 to 1,500 mAh — you charge it like a phone, in under an hour on most models.
  • A refillable tank (or cartridge) of 2 to 20 ml, often shipped pre-filled with 2 ml so you can vape straight away.
  • 10 ml bottles of nic salt liquid (20 mg/ml maximum, the legal strength) included in the box — two or three depending on the model — that you pour into the tank as you go.

In other words, you're buying a device plus its liquid, and a "30,000 puff" device isn't something you throw away after 30,000 puffs: it keeps working as long as you recharge it, and the advertised puff count reflects the liquid supplied.

How to refill and recharge a rechargeable puff

  1. First use: the cartridge is often pre-filled with 2 ml. Take a few gentle draws to check the coil is properly saturated.
  2. Refilling: open the tank cap (on the side or under the mouthpiece depending on the model), pour in a 10 ml bottle, close it and wait 5 minutes for the cotton to soak. Don't go past the fill line.
  3. Recharging: standard USB-C cable, on a phone charger or a USB port. An LED shows the charge. Avoid leaving the battery flat for days — it ages faster.
  4. End of life: when the taste turns "burnt" despite a full tank and a charged battery, the built-in coil is worn — time for a new puff (or a new cartridge on models with replaceable cartridges).

How long does a rechargeable puff really last?

The "K" figure on the box (10K, 28K, 50K…) is a manufacturer estimate measured with short puffs. The reliable measure is the volume of liquid supplied: a vaper replacing a pack of cigarettes a day uses about 2 to 3 ml per day.

40,000 to 50,000 puffs20 to 30 ml (2 to 3 bottles)2 to 3 weeksZPulse 42K, Gorilla X 43K, Stellarc 50K

Once the included bottles are gone, the puff keeps working with any 10 ml nic salt liquid — as long as the coil holds up. In practice, built-in coils usually take 3 to 5 refills before the flavour fades.

How much does it cost, and compared with what?

In our range, rechargeable puffs run from €11.90 (10K, 1 bottle) to €24.90 (77K, 1,500 mAh), most between €13 and €18 with 2 or 3 bottles of 10 ml. Per bottle, a "50K" model at €17.90 with 3 bottles works out at under €6 per 10 ml bottle, device included. That's a long way from an old-style disposable (around €8 for 2 ml). Model-by-model prices are in our article how much does a puff cost.

The next step, if you vape every day, is still a rechargeable pod with cartridges and 10 ml liquids of your choice: same simplicity, replaceable coil, and an even lower monthly cost. Our disposable vs rechargeable comparison does the maths.

How to choose your rechargeable puff

  • To try it out or as a backup: a 10K at €12 (Tornado, Tesla Bar) — 10 ml, 800 mAh battery, pocket-sized.
  • For one to two weeks: a 28K–32K (Cristal Puff, Falcon-X Plus) — 2 bottles, tight MTL draw close to a cigarette.
  • For maximum runtime: a 42K–50K (ZPulse, Gorilla X, Stellarc) — 1,000 to 1,200 mAh battery, 2 to 3 bottles, large tank.
  • Flavour: iced fruits, desserts or tobacco — every model comes in several flavours, the same choice as a nic salt e-liquid.

The Unicorn tip: recharge the battery before it's empty and refill the tank before it runs dry. A coil heating on dry cotton takes on a permanent burnt taste — the number one cause of a puff "dying" early, long before the battery does.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can a rechargeable puff be recharged?
The battery handles hundreds of cycles; it's the built-in coil that limits lifespan, generally 3 to 5 refills (30 to 50 ml) before the flavour fades.
What liquid goes in a rechargeable puff?
A nic salt e-liquid in a 10 ml bottle, ideally 50/50: that's the format of the bottles supplied and what the built-in coil is designed to vaporise.
Are disposable puffs still sold in France?
No: pre-filled single-use puffs are banned. Puffs sold legally are rechargeable devices with separate bottles, like every model in this guide.
Why does my puff taste burnt?
Empty tank, or cotton not yet soaked after a refill (wait 5 minutes), or a coil at the end of its life. If the taste persists with a full tank, the puff needs replacing.
10K or 50K puff: which one?
10K to try or as a backup (10 ml, 3 to 5 days); 40K–50K if you vape daily (20 to 30 ml, 2 to 3 weeks) — the price per bottle is much lower.
