Cotton is one of the most important parts of a rebuildable build: it soaks up your e-liquid, feeds it to the coil and largely determines how the flavours come through. Bad cotton means guaranteed dry hits. Good cotton, and your vape runs beautifully. Here is how to make the right choice.

Why cotton makes the difference

Unlike clearomisers with pre-built coils, rebuildable atomisers (RDA, RTA, RDTA) require you to wick the coil yourself with cotton. That cotton plays three essential roles:

  • Absorption — it holds the e-liquid and carries it to the coil
  • Wicking speed — it regulates the flow so you avoid dry hits and flooding
  • Neutrality — good cotton adds no off-taste of its own

What to look for

Wicking speed

The thicker your e-liquid (high VG ratio), the faster-wicking the cotton needs to be. With an 80/20 VG/PG ratio, cotton that is too dense can cause dry hits if it cannot keep up.

Heat resistance

Unbleached organic cotton copes better with high temperatures — essential in Direct Lung mode with low-ohm coils pushed at high wattage.

The format that suits your build

Several formats exist depending on the type of atomiser:

  • Sheets and rolls — flexible, cut to length, versatile for RDAs and RTAs
  • Pre-cut shoelaces — handy for RTAs with narrow juice ports
  • Mesh pads — designed specifically for mesh coils
  • Pre-cut strips — ideal for getting started, no cutting needed

Our pick: the best cottons around

HipHop Coton – Vivismoke

A continuous 4.5m ribbon of premium organic cotton. Exceptional absorption, quick to wick, solid heat resistance. Very versatile across every kind of build.

Cotton Bacon V2 – Wick N' Vape

The original version that started the trend. Made in the United States, free of oils and pesticides, with excellent heat resistance and faultless flavour.

Cloud 9 Cotton

A 100% natural Australian cotton, with no chemical treatment or bleaching. Optimal flavour guaranteed. Sold in 1m packs.

Coton Organique Vap'Extreme

Eight strips in a metal tin. Excellent wicking, zero off-taste, solid lifespan. Unbeatable value for money for regular vapers.

Fiber n'Cotton V2

An improved version with faster absorption and better retention, which keeps dry hits at bay. Lasts up to 3 days longer depending on the liquid and the wattage. Very good in RTAs and RDTAs.

For mesh builds

With a mesh coil, it is better to go for a suitable format:

Unicorn's tip: To get started, Cotton Bacon Prime remains the safe bet. For heavy users and RTA fans, a continuous roll such as HipHop Coton or Vap'Extreme works out cheaper over time.

How to wick properly

  1. Cut a length of cotton to suit your coil — it should stick out by 1 to 2cm on each side
  2. Thin the ends slightly to make them easier to feed through
  3. Slide it gently into the coil without forcing or compressing it
  4. Tuck the tails into the juice channels
  5. Saturate the cotton thoroughly with e-liquid before the first puff

FAQ: vape cotton

How long does vape cotton last?

In normal use, expect between 1 and 5 days depending on how often you vape, the wattage you use and the VG/PG ratio of your e-liquid. When the flavour turns flat or caramelised, that is the sign it needs changing.

Can you use cotton wool from the chemist?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended. Pharmacy cotton is often bleached with chemical agents that can break down under heat and spoil the flavour. Always go for organic cotton made for vaping.

Cotton too tight or too loose: what happens?

Too tight: the e-liquid struggles to flow and dry hits are guaranteed. Too loose: too much liquid arrives at once and you risk leaks. The rule of thumb: the cotton should pass freely through the coil without distorting it.

Should you rinse cotton before using it?

No. Premium vape cottons are already treated and ready to use. Just saturate them thoroughly with e-liquid before the first puff to avoid a dry hit at start-up.
