A complete kit for mixing your own e-liquid comes down to five items: an unflavoured base, nicotine shots (optional if you vape at 0 mg), a flavour concentrate, a graduated bottle to mix in and empty bottles for storage. A sixth item is optional: a finer measuring tool for the flavour. That is all, and the whole lot costs around twenty euros.

This page is the shopping list. The method, step by step, is in our guide Mixing your own e-liquid: a step-by-step method, and the formulas are in the DIY calculator. All prices below include VAT.

The Mix&Go PURE Base Pack already covers the first two items: base and shots in one purchase. All you add is a flavour and a bottle.

1. The base: most of the volume

Our Unicorn Base 1 litre (€9.90) and Unicorn Base 500 ml (€5.90) are unflavoured, nicotine-free bases, ready to use and made in France. They come in two ratios:

  • 50/50: for pods, MTL tanks and a tight draw.
  • 80VG/20PG: for sub-ohm and direct lung vaping, with more vapour.

For a first kit, take the 500 ml: it is plenty for several flavour trials. The litre makes sense once you have found your recipe.

2. Nicotine shots

Unicorn Boost is an unflavoured nicotine base in a 10 ml bottle at 20 mg/ml, at €1.50 each (€1.70 for the nicotine salt version). It comes in 50/50, 80VG/20PG and 20VG/80PG, and in packs of 30, 50 and 100 shots. One rule when buying: take the shot in the same ratio as your base, otherwise you shift the PG/VG of the final mix.

The house benchmark, taken from the base's product page: 2 shots in a 120 ml bottle topped up with base give about 3.3 mg/ml. For another strength or volume, the DIY calculator has the formula. If you vape nicotine-free, simply skip this line of the list.

3. The flavour: the taste

A flavour concentrate is dosed as a percentage of the final volume. The percentage and the steeping time depend on each flavour and are given on its product page. Three examples from our Flavours & Concentrates range:

  • Heisenberg Vampire Vape 30 ml (€9.90): a closely guarded recipe with notes of many red fruits and a distinctive freshness. Recommended dose 10 to 20 %, steep two to three days.
  • Red Astaire T-Juice 30 ml (€8.90): a fresh blend of black grape, eucalyptus, aniseed and menthol. Recommended dose 15 to 20 %, steep three to seven days.
  • RY4 Unicorn Flavors 10 ml (€1.80): tobacco, vanilla and caramel, made in France. Recommended dose 15 % in a 50/50 base.

How much liquid does one bottle make? At 15 %, a 30 ml concentrate makes 200 ml of finished liquid; at 20 %, 150 ml. A 10 ml flavour at 15 % makes about 66 ml.

4. Bottles: mixing and storing

You need two kinds of bottle, for two different jobs.

The graduated bottle is for mixing. Its markings let you pour shots, flavour and base straight to the right level. The 60 ml graduated bottle (€1.60) is made for one shot in 50 ml; the 120 ml graduated bottle (€2.10) fits the 2-shot recipe.

The storage bottle is for keeping and filling. The Chubby Gorilla v3 60 ml (€1.80) and 120 ml (€2.00) are made of soft food-grade plastic, very sturdy, with a nozzle that makes filling your tank easy. They come in clear and black.

What about a syringe? We do not sell syringes, pipettes or measuring beakers. A graduated bottle is enough for a first kit; a graduated syringe becomes useful if you want to measure flavour to the millilitre on small volumes.

Three kits ready to order

The 120 ml starter kit (about 3.3 mg/ml)

  • 1 Unicorn Base 500 ml, 50/50: €5.90
  • 2 Unicorn Boost 50/50: €3.00
  • 1 graduated bottle 120 ml: €2.10
  • 1 Heisenberg concentrate 30 ml: €9.90

Total: €20.90. In the bottle: 20 ml of shots, 18 ml of flavour (15 %) and 82 ml of base, which makes 120 ml at about 3.3 mg/ml. You still have over 400 ml of base for the next bottles.

The Mix&Go 200 ml kit (3 mg/ml)

  • 1 Mix&Go PURE Base Pack 200 ml, 3 mg: €7.90
  • 1 Red Astaire concentrate 30 ml: €8.90
  • 2 graduated bottles 120 ml: €4.20

Total: €21.00. The pack contains 170 ml of base and 3 shots of 10 ml at 20 mg, enough for 200 ml at 3 mg. If you add 30 ml of flavour (15 %), use 140 ml of base instead of 170 to stay at 200 ml and 3 mg: in each graduated bottle, 15 ml of shots, 15 ml of flavour and 70 ml of base. According to the manufacturer, the formulation by Pure laboratories greatly shortens the steeping time: the mix is ready within a few hours.

The 1 litre stock-up kit

A Unicorn Base 1 litre (€9.90) fills about twelve 120 ml graduated bottles (12 x 82 ml = 984 ml). To bring them to 3.3 mg/ml you need 24 shots, and at 15 % flavour, 216 ml of concentrate, that is seven to eight 30 ml bottles. Add a few Chubby Gorillas to store your finished liquids. At this volume, the 30-shot packs of Unicorn Boost are more practical than single bottles.

The Mix&Go PURE Pack in detail

The pack comes in four versions, each in 50/50 or 70/30:

VersionContentsPrice
200 ml, 3 mg170 ml base + 3 shots 10 ml at 20 mg€7.90
200 ml, 6 mg140 ml base + 6 shots 10 ml at 20 mg€9.90
500 ml, 3 mg420 ml base + 7 shots 10 ml at 20 mg + 1 shot 10 ml at 10 mg€12.90
500 ml, 6 mg350 ml base + 15 shots 10 ml at 20 mg€15.90

The volumes given (200 ml, 500 ml) are base plus shots. The flavour comes on top: remove as much base as you add flavour if you want to keep the pack's nicotine strength.

The Unicorn tip: for a first kit, buy just one flavour. You learn its dose and steeping time, you adjust on the next bottle, and you do not end up with five half-used concentrates. The rest of the range is waiting in our DIY section.

The most common buying mistakes

  • Base and shots in different ratios. A 50/50 base with 80VG/20PG shots gives a thicker liquid than planned. Buy both in the same ratio.
  • Forgetting that the flavour counts in the volume. 30 ml of flavour added to 200 ml of nicotine base makes 230 ml, and the nicotine strength drops accordingly.
  • Buying too many flavours at once. Each concentrate has its own dose and steeping time: start with one.
  • Choosing a mixing bottle that is too small. A 60 ml graduated bottle cannot hold the 2-shot recipe: you need the 120 ml.
  • Choosing the ratio without looking at your device. Pod or MTL: 50/50. Sub-ohm: 80VG/20PG.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a complete DIY e-liquid kit cost?
Our starter kit (500 ml base, 2 shots, 120 ml graduated bottle, one 30 ml concentrate) comes to €20.90, for a first 120 ml bottle at about 3.3 mg/ml. After that you still have base for the next bottles: only shots and flavour need restocking.
Do I need a syringe?
Not to get started. A graduated bottle lets you pour shots, flavour and base to the right level. A graduated syringe becomes useful to measure flavour very precisely on small volumes. We do not sell them.
Can I build a nicotine-free kit?
Yes: just take the shots off the list. Base, flavour and a graduated bottle are enough. In a 120 ml bottle, that gives for example 18 ml of flavour (15 %) and 102 ml of base.
Mix&Go pack or separate base and shots?
The Mix&Go PURE Base Pack saves you counting shots: the nicotine strength is already worked out for 200 or 500 ml. Separate base and shots leave you free on volume, ratio and strength. Both work with the same flavour and the same bottles.
Which base for which device?
For a pod or an MTL tank, a 50/50 base. For sub-ohm direct lung vaping, an 80VG/20PG base. The guide Mixing your own e-liquid explains PG/VG in detail.
